Nothing will stop ME

#MenstruationMatters

Nothing Will Stop Me is a campaign about menstrual hygiene. It’s about removing myths around menstruation, confronting taboos and raising awareness.

It was created by Brighter Communities Worldwide in 2018 to tie in with Global Menstrual Hygiene Day – an annual awareness raising day on May 28th. We called it Nothing will stop ME because it focuses on improving the life opportunities, education and income of women and girls in Kenya.

Nothing will stop ME aims to help put an end to school dropouts and poor attendance because of inadequate menstrual hygiene management. We’re committed to preventing the loss of income and dignity of women labourers without access to safe and affordable sanitary products.

There are many issues aside from menstrual hygiene that impact on the lives of women and girls and prevent them from reaching their potential including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), gender based violence and inequality around access to education. Nothing Will Stop Me has become our slogan to advocate for the rights of women and girls in the communities with whom we work. We do this through our community development programmes.

Menstrual Hygiene Day  The world is still in COVID-19 crisis mode and it is unclear when the pandemic will be under control.  The pandemic has exacerbated the menstruation-related challenges women and girls face around the world and we need to tackle these challenges with urgency.

At the same time, we also have to look ahead so we don’t lose sight of our joint long-term goal: a world where no woman or girl is held back because she menstruates by 2030.

To achieve that goal, we need to step up action and investment in Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH), starting with this MH Day! Waiting for the Covid-19 pandemic to end is not an option.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the way that we deliver our menstrual health programme.  Community volunteers have trained as menstrual health ambassadors.  They meet the women and girls in their community in groups of 5 to adhere to social distancing. They go through the facts about menstruation using activities including the Menstruation Bracelet – a simple yet powerful global symbol for menstruation and MH Day. Each sanitary hygiene kit distributed includes reusable pads and information on how to add to them by making your own pads.

The Nothing Will Stop Me #PeriodsInPandemics campaign along with raising awareness will also raise funds to purchase sanitary hygiene kits so that as many women and girls as possible can be supported at this time.
