Nothing will stop ME

Nothing Will Stop Me is a campaign about menstrual hygiene. It’s about removing myths around menstruation, confronting taboos and raising awareness.

It was created by Brighter Communities Worldwide in 2018 to tie in with Global Menstrual Hygiene Day – an annual awareness raising day on May 28th. We called it Nothing will stop ME because it focuses on improving the life opportunities, education and income of women and girls in Kenya.

Nothing will stop ME aims to help put an end to school dropouts and poor attendance because of inadequate menstrual hygiene management. We’re committed to preventing the loss of income and dignity of women labourers without access to safe and affordable sanitary products.

There are many issues aside from menstrual hygiene that impact on the lives of women and girls and prevent them from reaching their potential including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), gender based violence and inequality around access to education. Nothing Will Stop Me has become our slogan to advocate for the rights of women and girls in the communities with whom we work. We do this through our community development programmes.

Menstrual Hygiene Day

28 May 2020 – Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020 comes in the midst of a global crisis as the world fights the COVID-19 pandemic. The consequences of COVID-19 are felt even more strongly by those already marginalised through poverty and inequality particularly women and girls.

Periods do not stop for pandemics! This year more than ever, Menstrual Hygiene Day (MH Day) is so important as a means to break the silence, raise awareness and raise support for women and girls already challenged in managing their menstruation in privacy, safety and with dignity.

Our Menstrual Hygiene campaign this year will focus on reaching 5,000 women and girls in the community with information and sanitary hygiene kits via a network of MH Ambassadors. These are volunteers from the community who are already trained through our regular MH programmes which have two strands that work towards addressing menstrual health challenges for women and girls – Girls for Girls in schools and Jiamini in the community. Both programmes provide education around sexual health and reproduction, income generating skills, access to affordable, reusable sanitary kits, school infrastructure including latrines, washrooms and access to water, raising awareness of menstrual health among the whole community, eradication of stigmatising girls and women due to menstruation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the way that we deliver these programmes. The MH Ambassadors will meet women and girls in their community in groups of 5 to adhere to social distancing. They will go through the facts about menstruation using activities including the Menstruation Bracelet – a simple yet powerful global symbol for menstruation and MH Day. Each sanitary hygiene kit distributed will include reusable pads and information on how to add to them by making your own pads.

The Nothing Will Stop Me #PeriodsInPandemics campaign along with raising awareness will also raise funds to purchase sanitary hygiene kits so that as many women and girls as possible can be supported at this time.
